About wheel.me
At wheel.me we build robotics infrastructure from the ground up, combining custom hardware, embedded systems, real-time robotics software and cloud-based management tools. Our core innovation, Genius, is the world's first autonomous wheel. It transforms ordinary trolleys and transport equipment into intelligent mobile robots that operate safely and efficiently in real-world environments. Our systems are designed and manufactured in Norway, with robots running autonomously at customer sites across Europe, the U.S. and Africa, and a global network of close to 40 partners.

About the role

wheel.me is scaling its robot platform to support the next generation of the product and a fast-growing commercial footprint. The software on our robots has grown quickly and organically. We now need someone who can see the whole picture, set a clear technical direction and bring the team along.

In this role you will shape the technical direction of the full on-robot software stack, from embedded and OS layers through the robotics application and up to the cloud interface. You will do it hands-on and together with the team: writing production code, building the architecture roadmap and making sure technical decisions are understood by engineers, product and leadership alike.

A few examples of challenges you will be working on
🤖
Robot and cloud
What data should a robot send, how often, and what should happen when the network drops in the middle of a job?
🔄
Software updates across the fleet
How do we roll out new software to robots running at customer sites across Europe, with versioning and rollback we can trust?
🛠️
An organically grown codebase
Where should the module boundaries go, and how do we get there without slowing down product delivery?
🔍
Observability
When a robot behaves unexpectedly at a customer site, can we understand why from logs and telemetry?
⚖️
Trade-offs
What belongs on the robot and what belongs in the cloud, and how do we balance performance, reliability, and development speed?
What you will do
📈
Evolve the software architecture
Evolve the on-robot software architecture across all layers, keeping it modular and adaptable as the product scales.
🗺️
Build and maintain the roadmap
Build and maintain the architecture roadmap together with the team and product, and turn it into clear priorities.
📊
Make technical debt visible
Make technical debt and fundamentals visible, such as CI/CD, test and release, platform and embedded, and make sure they get capacity next to product features.
🔗
Define and document interfaces
Define and document the interfaces between the robot and the wider platform, covering APIs, telemetry, data flow and software lifecycle.
✍️
Establish shared principles
Establish shared principles for scalability, performance, observability and fault tolerance, and help the team apply them.
💻
Stay hands-on
Stay hands-on by prototyping, validating interfaces and contributing production code at every layer.
🤝
Lead design reviews
Lead design reviews and cross-team discussions, shape how our teams work together and hand work to each other, and ensure decisions are communicated and followed through.
Must have
  • Solid experience in professional software development, including production C++.
  • Experience with software that runs in production. You have built, tested, shipped, and maintained software that real users depend on, and you have dealt with what happens when it fails.
  • Experience working across more than one layer of a system, for example, embedded or firmware, Linux or OS level, application logic, or backend and cloud integration. You understand how the layers affect each other and have designed interfaces between components.
  • Experience driving technical decisions across teams. For example, you have led a redesign, owned a technical area, or built a plan others followed, and lived with the results.
  • Clear communication. You can explain technical choices and trade-offs to engineers, product owners, and leadership, in terms each audience understands.
Nice to have
  • Experience with robotics middleware such as ROS, OTA update systems, Linux at OS level, embedded systems, and safety-critical software.
  • Ability to quickly learn new technologies and domains, especially within robotics.
You will thrive here if you
🧠
Get energy from understanding the whole system, not just your own part of it.
🧭
Are comfortable stepping into a codebase that has grown organically, finding what matters and setting a direction others can follow.
📝
Like making complexity simple and writing it down so others can use it.
🧑‍💻
Prefer helping a capable team think more architecturally over solving everything yourself.
💪
Are confident enough to make a call under uncertainty, and humble enough to listen when others see something you have missed.
🧐
Want to understand why things are the way they are before deciding how they should change, and choose tools and methods to fit the problem.
This is probably not the right role for you if
⛔
You want a purely strategic role and no longer want to write code.
⛔
You are looking to lead a large engineering organization.
⛔
You prefer going deep in one specialist area over working across the whole stack.

Practical details
Location: Oslo. On-site presence is expected, with flexibility for focused remote work. Start date: As soon as possible.
Application process
Applications are reviewed continuously. Do you have questions, or want to gain a better basis for assessing whether the role is right for you? Feel free to contact us at Vitring for an informal and confidential chat!
